Magnesium Hydroxide

Product Definition

Garrison Minerals focuses on two sources of Magnesium Hydroxide. Brucite is a naturally occurring mineral which contains approx 95% Mg(OH)2. This mineral is ground down to a fine powder that can then be transported worldwide in bulk bags.

High purity synthetic material containing 99% Mg(OH)2 comes from a Magnesium Chloride source where the Magnesium Hydroxide is reacted out and produced into a fine powder.

Uses

Wastewater treatment: Acid stream neutralizer; precipitates heavy metals
Anaerobic Digester: Acid Neutralizer; pH adjustment for high carbohydrate anaerobic digesters. Both upflow and lagoon systems
Abrasives: As a binder in grinding wheels
Feed supplement: Source of Elemental Mg for animals
Chemicals: Elemental Mg source for a variety of chemicals, eg Magnesium Sulfate
Coatings: Pigment extender in paint and varnish
Fertilizers: Source of essential magnesium for plant nutrition
Insulation: Light, flexible mats for insulating pipes
Pharmaceuticals: Special grades of magnesium hydroxide, oxide and carbonate are used in antacids, cosmetics, toothpaste and ointments
Refractory and ceramics: Basic ingredient in product formulations for the steel industry
Sugar refining: Reduces scale build-up when used in juice clarification and precipitation

Availability

The Magnesium Hydroxide carried by Garrison Minerals always starts out as a dry powder. Various packaging for the dry powder is available per customers request.

Liquid: The dry powder can be made into a liquid (slurry) very quickly. There is NO HEAT of hydration as seen with Magnesium Oxide based products. NO PRESSURIZATION required for hydration and no aging time.

The dry powder mixes into solution in the same fashion as mixing baking flour into water. Minimal agitation is required and no standard percent solids are required. A 50% solids solution (1 lb of water + 1 lb of water) has the consistency of latex paint. Typically, 24,000 lbs dry pounds can be mixed in 60 minutes and ready for use.

Liquid (slurry) availability: Slurry is available in multiple locations. Garrison Minerals has developed a dry mixing system that requires a 300 sq ft footprint and runs off of 240/480 power. The mixing system can be attached to any size tank and can mix powder into solution at a rate of 400 lbs/min. The cost of shipping premade solution with 50% water is expensive and a waste when slurry can be made on site.

Caveat

Magnesium Hydroxide and environment: The Carbon footprint associated with various production methods of Mg(OH)2 varies greatly. The following table shows the Carbon footprint for 1 Mt of Magnesium Hydroxide in dry form:

Magnesite (MgO): Approx 637 kg of CO2 (1,404 lbs of CO2)
Seawater/Well Brine: Approx 380 kg of CO2 (838 lbs of CO2)
Brucite: Approx 74.4 kg of CO2 (164 lbs of CO2)
